Enzymatic detachment of Staphylococcus epidermidis biofilms.

The gram-positive bacterium Staphylococcus epidermidis is the most common cause of infections associated with catheters and other indwelling medical devices. S. epidermidis produces an extracellular slime that enables it to form adherent biofilms on plastic surfaces. We found that a biofilm-releasing enzyme produced by the gram-negative periodontal pathogen Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans ...

Penetration of rifampin through Staphylococcus epidermidis biofilms.

Rifampin penetrated biofilms formed by Staphylococcus epidermidis but failed to effectively kill the bacteria. Penetration was demonstrated by a simple diffusion cell bioassay and by transmission electron microscopic observation of antibiotic-affected cells at the distal edge of the biofilm.

Strategies to control Staphylococcus epidermidis biofilms

Staphylococcus epidermidis is the staphylococci species most commonly associated with bacteremia and hospital-acquired infections and has recently arisen as the leading cause of infections related to indwelling medical devices such as vascular catheters, prosthetic joints and artificial heart valves. The prevalence of S. epidermidis in hospital-acquired infections is due to its ability to adher...

Inhibition of Staphylococcus epidermidis Biofilms Using Polymerizable Vancomycin Derivatives

BACKGROUND Biofilm formation on indwelling medical devices is a ubiquitous problem causing considerable patient morbidity and mortality. In orthopaedic surgery, this problem is exacerbated by the large number and variety of material types that are implanted. Metallic hardware in conjunction with polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) bone cement is commonly used. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES We asked whether po...

Removal and inactivation of Staphylococcus epidermidis biofilms by electrolysis.

Bacterial biofilms were exposed to electrolysis by making the steel substratum an electrode in a circuit including a 6-V battery. These treatments resulted in killing (2.1-log reduction) and removal (4.0-log reduction) of viable cells at the anode and cathode, respectively, within a few minutes.
